After President Donald Trump designated Antifa a terrorist group earlier this week, “the time has also come in Hungary” to do the same, said Prime Minister Viktor Orbán Friday on state radio. A conservative nationalist who is popular among Trump supporters, Orbán declared, “Antifa is a terrorist organization.”

Antifa is an amorphous left-wing movement that rose in prominence during the first Trump administration. Its name is a shortened form of “antifascism,” though the group has drawn criticism from liberal Democrats for its disruptive and often violent tactics.

Trump had announced Wednesday on Truth Social that he was “designating ANTIFA, A SICK, DANGEROUS, RADICAL LEFT DISASTER, AS A MAJOR TERRORIST ORGANIZATION.” Trump added that he would recommend that the group’s funding sources be investigated.

It’s unclear what the new label will mean in practice, since Antifa is a domestic movement with a decentralized structure, unlike other groups that have been designated terrorist organizations. Trump labelled Antifa a terror group in 2020, although no action was taken by his administration to follow up on that declaration.

Since the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk last week, many on the American right have called for aggressive action against left-wing groups and the organizations that fund them.
